The Legacy of Frédéric Ozanam, 193 Years Later

Council General International

Each April 23, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul commemorates the birth of Blessed Frédéric Ozanam (1813–1853), whose life and thought continue, nearly two centuries later, to illuminate the Church’s social mission and the commitment of Vincentians around the world. His life remains an invitation to live the faith coherently, grounded in the conviction that it is fully expressed through closeness, shared responsibility, and care for those facing difficult circumstances.

At a time of profound social change, Ozanam was able to look at reality with clarity and respond with a vision that went beyond his immediate context. Considered a forerunner of the Church’s Social Doctrine, he placed the dignity of the human person at the center, along with the need to build a more just society in which faith is translated into active commitment. His understanding of social action, combined with his ability to mobilize others, opened a path that remains a reference point for addressing contemporary challenges.

This vision took shape in 1833 with the founding of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, alongside a group of university students who shared a concern for responding concretely to the needs around them. Since then, closeness, direct knowledge of situations, and accompaniment have shaped a way of acting that places the person at the center, recognizes their value, and promotes their integral development.

Over these 193 years, the SSVP has kept this original spirit alive and adapted it to diverse social contexts and ever-changing realities. The work carried out today by its members and volunteers reflects this sustained commitment: an effort aimed at creating opportunities, strengthening community ties, and advancing toward a more inclusive society.

This commemoration also coincides with the first anniversary of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, whose pontificate was a constant call to place the most vulnerable at the heart of the Church’s life. His invitation to build a close and committed Church resonates deeply with Ozanam’s legacy and with the mission the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul continues to pursue today.

Remembering Frédéric Ozanam today means recognizing the enduring relevance of a way of understanding commitment that continues to challenge the present. His example invites us to keep building a more just and fraternal society, in which every person finds opportunities and receives support with respect and dignity. In this horizon, the work of the SSVP retains its full meaning as an expression of shared responsibility oriented toward the common good.
