Appeal for January. Model Farm in Cameroon

Appeal of the Month – A New Way to Help

Each month, the CGI’s Commission for International Aid and Development (CIAD) selects a particularly worthwhile Society project which is badly in need of funds, and invites the Society throughout the world to support it directly.

Normally, the CIAD would help such needy projects itself, but with COVID-19 and other demands on its limited funds, the CIAD cannot assist all worthwhile projects presented. We are, therefore, providing an opportunity for selected projects to appeal for the support of the international community of the Society through the medium of the CGI’s website with the CIAD’s full endorsement.

APPEAL FOR JANUARY

MODEL FARM IN CAMEROON: INCOME GENERATION, JOB CREATION,

COMBATING FOOD INSECURITY.

The goal is to develop an organic market garden to promote sustainability practices without the use of artificial fertilizers and to encourage crop diversity such as bananas, fruit trees, corn, groundnuts and soybeans. Raising livestock (chickens, sheep, rabbits, pigs…) will also be another small-scale farming activity. There are four main objectives:

– Teaching the local community about organic farming in an area where much of the soil is barren due to overuse of chemicals.

– Income generation to support the work carried out by Christ the King Conference (Foumban) to help local families and young people.

– Food distribution to needy people supported by the Conference: 60 families, 300 prisoners, 100 young people.

– Job opportunities for over 100 local students for farm work during school holidays. Thus, they can earn money to pay for school fees, clothing and supplies.

How to help

An investment of €20,000 is required in order to start the farm. Since Christ the King Conference is short of funds, it depends on external support. The CIAD supported it in the past but can no longer be the major funder.

Hence, the CIAD strongly encourages SSVP members, Conferences and Councils throughout the world to support this Appeal. Any help is welcome! Your generosity will keep this model project going, which is so important for the SSVP Cameroon.
