Serviens in spe (service in hope).
The Saint Vincent de Paul Society’s motto is serviens in spe. For volunteers, the notion of service means being useful rather than implying obligation. Serving means making oneself useful to something or someone. Volunteers serve the poor in the hope of contributing towards a better world and of deepening their faith. According to resources and location, service can take the form of modest action: for example, helping people with administrative procedures, delivering meals to the elderly, and repairing sick people’s homes. These countless small actions carried out daily by the Saint Vincent de Paul Society’s conferences form the great network of charity desired by Frédéric Ozanam, one of the SSVP’s main founders.
