In order to commemorate more intensively the ‘International Youth Day’, on July 4th, the Council General International (CGI) of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP), supported by the Vice-Presidency of Youth, Children and Teenagers, has produced beautiful material to help Vincentian youth celebrate this day in all its glory.
This year, the central theme will be “Vincentian Youth: Sharing Hope and Charity”, two theological virtues that, together with faith, lead Christians to heaven and to the neighbors, especially the poorest. Hope is also all we need during these difficult times of the pandemic.
In the material produced, addressed to the Superior or National Councils, our Vice-president Willian Alves writes an affectionate letter to all the SSVP youth, reflecting on the issue and providing several examples of concrete gestures and suggested activities that could be carried out on July 4th. The document also includes prayers and suggestions for liturgical celebrations. Due to health restrictions, these initiatives can be undertaken remotely, with the help of social networks and Internet, involving the SSVP youth of each city and country.
Our brother William concludes the letter with four food-for-thought pieces of advice (living joy, living charity, living audacity and loving the Eucharist). “This very special date, July 4th, prompts us to better grasp the inception of our institution, which was founded by young people, surrounded by young people, and expanded thanks to the courage, the audacity and the witness of many of them, who devoted to the mission of being Church alongside the most needy, the poor”, underlined Willian Alves.
The “International SSVP Youth Day” was launched under the current CGI’s term of office in 2017, thus becoming a tradition within our Society. July 4th makes reference to the liturgical date of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, a SSVP member in process of canonization at the Vatican. This date was fixed by the Council for the “annual national collection for youth”, which won’t be held this year due to Covid-19 pandemic. We kindly ask members to be doubly generous for 2021 collection.
“May Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, patron of Vincentian youth, intercede before God for each of the SSVP youth around the world, so that they might have health, energy, innovation and the will to fulfill the mission of sharing hope and charity everywhere, today and always, especially in times of pandemic and with the most needy”, urged our dear 16th President General, brother Renato Lima.
