Cambodia elects new national president
Khoeurn Sory has been elected the new president of the SSVP in Cambodia for the next four years. In Cambodia, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 2004. There are currently 25 conferences in three dioceses (Battambang, Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham). In all, there are around 400 active members.
The mandate of the new board will run from May 2024 to May 2028. “This is my first time as President of SSVP Cambodia. I will do my best to collaborate with the members of the National Council,” she said.
The mission of the new administration is to collaborate with local churches and NGOs and to encourage SSVP members to dedicate themselves more to the poor. In Cambodia there are many poor families in rural and remote areas, far from the conferences, according to the new president. The country currently has a partnership with SSVP Australia for the development of projects in the Asian country.
Among the work carried out by the SSVP over the years in the country is visiting the poor, distributing food to the needy and buying medicines, as well as renovating the homes of these families. Another front of work involves sending patients to hospitals and visiting the sick in their homes. In addition, the work includes distributing food to homeless people, giving feasts to needy children on festive dates and distributing scholarships to poor students.
