Appeal for August: SSVP Response to Housing Crisis for Disaster Victims (Madagascar)

Appeal of the Month – A New Way to Help

Each month, the CGI’s Commission for International Aid and Development (CIAD) selects a particularly worthwhile Society project which is badly in need of funds and invites the Society throughout the world to support it directly.

Normally, the CIAD would support much-needed projects itself; but with Covid-19 and other demands on its limited funds, the CIAD cannot assist all worthwhile projects presented. We are, therefore, providing an opportunity for selected projects to appeal for the support of the international community of the Society through the medium of CGIs website with the full endorsement of the CIAD.

Background

Madagascar, located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, is the fourth largest island in the world, larger in size than France. Being one of the 10 poorest countries in the world, with an income per capita of $ 1,660 a year, it is highly exposed to natural disasters and severe weather. Cyclones occur every year, as well as floods and drought, causing damage and destruction to the homes of the poorest.

The Society in this country is very active, with over 150 Conferences and 3,000 members who strive all year long to share love and bring assistance to those in need. Each time a natural disaster strikes, Vincentians do their best to support those affected with emergency basic assistance as well as with home repair/reconstruction (a long term objective).

The Appeal

The National Council of Madagascar has spotted 17 families, whose houses have been burnt, partially damaged or totally destroyed. The home repair/construction amounts to € 58,500.

Even though the CIAD has supported Madagascar with a small emergency grant earlier this year; it does not have the resources needed for this repair/construction work and the provision of food and household essentials.

The CIAD strongly urges SSVP members, Conferences and Councils throughout the world to support this Appeal. Your generosity will drive forward this vital project, so important for the Society in Madagascar.

How to help

For further details on how to donate to the SSVP Mozambique, please email: cgi.ciad@ssvpglobal.org. Within the framework of this appeal, the CGI is not the recipient, but the middleman of this direct aid to our sisters and brothers in Madagascar.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
