Appeal for March. “A healthy start”. Daily breakfast for pre-primary school children in Grenada

Appeal of the Month – A New Way to Help

Each month, the Commission for International Aid and Development (CIAD) of the CGI selects a particularly worthwhile project of the Society, which is badly in need of funds, and invites the Society throughout the world to support it directly.

Under normal circumstances, CIAD would help such much need projects itself but with COVID-19 and other demands on its limited funds, CIAD cannot assist all worthwhile projects submitted. We are, therefore, providing an opportunity for selected projects to appeal for the support of the international community of the Society through the medium of CGI’s website with the full endorsement of CIAD.

The Situation: Children in need of food.

This project seeks to provide a daily breakfast to 31 children between the ages of 3-4+ years at the New Hampshire Pre-Primary school, in Grenada (Caribbean island).

The school is located in a rural community with a high unemployment rate, especially since the Covid-19 and many of the families live in poverty or are very vulnerable.

There is a recognized need by the school authorities and parents to support the children’s growth and development through the provision of daily breakfasts as on many occasions the children are not provided with that meal at their homes. Lack of a healthy start to the day compromises the children’s development in their most formative years.

The appeal: The project will ensure that each child receives a healthy breakfast daily

This will support each child’s physical, mental, emotional and academic development. It will also lay the foundation for them to progress into primary and secondary school. This is consistent with studies, which indicate that the early years are critical to the development of well-rounded individuals. It will also release some of the burdens and stresses faced by the parents in trying to cope with the Covid-19 crisis.

How to help:

This requires a yearly budget of US$ 1,561. The National Council of Grenada does not have the necessary funds and is thus requesting international support

After reviewing carefully the budgets presented, CIAD is willing to support this effort, but does not have any funding available. CIAD strongly encourages members, Conferences and Councils of the SSVP throughout the world to support this Appeal. Please send what you can. Your generosity will enable this model project, which is so important for the SSVP in Grenada, to continue.
