COMMISSION FOR INTERNATIONAL AID AND DEVELOPMENT
Meeting of 10 November 2010
Overview of decisions taken
At its
meeting held on 10 November 2010, the CIAD (former TTC) has taken (or
confirmed) a series of decisions. Here is a summary of these decisions.
The
Commission has acknowledged the decision (taken by the CIAD Board) to send an
emergency 5.000 Euro to Vietnam,
to assist the victims of the flood with food, clothing, water and emergency
items.
After the
attacks against the Christian community in Iraq the Commission has sent two
3,000 Euro instalments (6.000 Euro) to
SSVP Lebanon, to assist the Iraqi Vincentians.
The
application for a 29.860 € emergency
project in Uganda
has also been accepted. The project consists in distributing mosquito nets,
tools and crop to displaced people in a camp affected by mudslides.
In Nicaragua, the
CIAD has approved the funding of the extension of the services of a dispensary
that belongs to the Society. With 11.157€,
SSVP Nicaragua will offer the services of a nursery to single mothers, in order
to allow them to get a job.
In Nigeria, the
CIAD has approved the construction of a borehole, to provide drinkable water to
a village. The 55,000 € should be released once a similar project, (funded by
SSVP Ireland in another village in Nigeria) has proved to be
successful. (Final approval pending)
The SSVP in Dominican Republic
has applied for the funding of the extension of the work of a rice plantation,
which is providing jobs to the local community and funds for SSVP’s charity
work. As the 61,395 US
$ budget is too high as compared to CIAD financial capacity, the Commission has
approached a few countries to consider a common funding. (Final approval pending)
In 2010, a
total amount of 728.503 euros has been sent (or pledged) to 18 countries on 29
projects: 464.277 € (74%) on emergency and rehabilitation after disasters, and
264.226 € on development projects.
