The late arrival of the south west monsoon brought in heavy rain in parts of India. The east Coast was the worst affected by floods in two states: Karnataka and Andra Pradesh claiming around 250 lives and rendering more than 2.5 million people homeless, taking shelter in over 1200 temporary relief camps organized by government and voluntary organizations.

In the past weeks,  some countries in Asia & Oceania were devastated by natural disasters which have affected tens of thousands of people that were displaced and rendered homeless including many hundreds of deaths.  The affected countries are:-

Taiwan    –    Typhoon Morakot
Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia   --   Typhoon Ketsama
Indonesia    ---  Tsunami and resultant earthquake
Samoa and Tonga  ---  Tsunami

As you know, on 6 April 2009 a major earthquake struck Aquilla which is about 80 km North East of Rome, Italy. The death toll is 294, injured 1,500 with 65,000 people rendered homeless and 36,000 of them are still living in tents. 10,000 houses were completely destroyed and thousands more damaged and not safe to live in...

PUERTO PRINCIPE, 5 septiembre 2008 (AFP) - Haití esperaba el viernes ayuda internacional de urgencia para socorrer a miles de afectados por los ciclones Gustav y Hanna, que causaron unas 200 muertes, mientras se temía que el huracán Ike pudiera azotar la isla en los próximos días.
"Haití pidió oficialmente asistencia internacional", indicó el viernes Elisabeth Byrs, portavoz en Ginebra de la oficina de coordinación de los asuntos humanitarios de la ONU. "La ONU está preparando un llamado de emergencia internacional" para recaudar fondos, agregó.

Big damages in Vietnam for the typhoon Kammuri PDF Print E-mail

The typhoon "Kammuri" caused immense damages to many people in three provinces Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Yen Bai of VietNam, in early August. There were more than 200 dead and missing, many families have lost everything: houses, rice kept in reserve for their daily meals and green paddy in their fields for the next harvest, even the elementary tools for their work. Many families are living in an extreme misery.

Dear Fellow Vincentians,


Typhoon Frank hit our country last June 19 and left thousands of families homeless in Panay island, in the country’s Visayas Region. It was reportedly the worst disaster that has ever struck the region. The SSVP National Council responded by sending financial assistance for the immediate basic needs of the victims in Iloilo, Roxas, Aklan and Antique, the 4 provinces in Panay island. Almost one thousand bags containing basic needs for immediate sustenance were distributed to poor families.

Nargis storm in Burma – earthquake in China help us help them! PDF Print E-mail

As you know, Nargis cyclone has violently hit Burma some days ago. Provisional tolls are tremendous: 30,000 to 110,000 deaths, 230,000 disappeared and 1.5 million homeless.
A few days after, a terrible earthquake hit Sichuan Province in China, killing 30,000, with 200,000 missing and and 4.5 million homeless.
