Cardinal Paul Josef CORDES, President of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum has chaired in Salamanca one of the sessions of the Extraordinary General Assembly of the catholic association International Confederation of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.
His Eminence has addressed the participants giving a lecture on the origins of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, present in 146 countries and which works of help take care of the needs of nearly forty million people in the world.
Cardinal Cordes has handed out to outgoing President General of the Confederation of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, José Ramón Díaz-Torremocha (Spain) the medal of St Gregory the Great Order awarded to him by the Holy Father in recognition of his services to the Church, as Cardinal Cordes reminded.
During these sessions, the International Confederation has elected its new President General, MICHAEL THIO (Singapore) with 87% of the votes.
It is the first time that this almost 180 years old Society (1833), also known as “the Conferences of St Vincent de Paul” created in Paris, France, elects a non European President General. Mr Thio, native Singaporean citizen has help several positions in the Society and has chaired up to now its Territorial Technical Commission in charge of extraordinary aids granted to the countries where the Society is present.
Let us remind that the Society of St Vincent de Paul is present in 146 countries, that it has 51,000 workgroups worldwide, composed of 750,000 members helped by more than 1,500,000 in their social works.
